Nursing in a carrier is an assisted activity — it is not hands-free. Since nursing and babywearing are two different skills, it’s important to be patient with yourself and get comfortable with each individually before merging them.
Tips for Nursing in the Carrier
IMPORTANT:
Always adjust the carrier and baby back to normal positioning when you’re done nursing.
Do not fully cover your baby's face while nursing. Always ensure the nose and mouth remain clear.
Never lay your baby in a fully reclined cradle position. Keep the baby tummy to tummy with you so their body aligns with the breast.
Nursing while your baby is in the carrier should always be done while seated and/or fully focused on making sure baby stays in the proper position and is fully supported.
If your baby falls asleep while nursing, unlatch and readjust them in the carrier for proper positioning.
Steps:
Loosen the under-arm strap on the side you are nursing and slightly loosen the waistband to slide the baby to the side.
Depending on your baby’s size and your breast, you can try lowering the baby to reach nipple level or lifting your breast to reach the baby. Experiment to see which works best for you.
You may need to hold your breast in position for proper latch.
Ensure baby is tummy to tummy while latched to the breast.
